About Children Over Politics
Children Over Politics (COP) was founded in 2014 when young people from Los Angeles chose to respond to the Unaccompanied Immigrant Minor crisis by leading a hunger fast and fundraising for 5 days. Since then the youth have recruited more youth and committed themselves to advocating for four pillars: Comprehensive Immigration Reform, Income Equality, Voter Mobilization and Racial Justice.
In 2015, COP showed solidarity with youth who have experienced police brutality and working parents who have faced wage theft, low pay, and other issues of social and economic justice. Additionally, COP members have participated in lobby days (visits to local and state officials) to advocate for a better environment, wage justice and health4all.
Through monthly meetings youth discuss critical topics, which impact their future and then work together to take action on behalf of their generation.
The organization is led by youth for youth. Members of the organization are 14 – 25 years of age and include the children of SEIU members and the children of partner organizations. COP Chapters are located in Los Angeles, Fresno, San Jose and Oakland. The organization plans to expand over the course of 2016.
