I have learned that by youth having the knowledge and information to know what is going on in their communities, they also develop the ability to make the positive changes they want to see. Children Over Politics to me means that there is a space where other youth and myself can come together to learn about what goes on in the society we live in and how younger generations can use their voice to make a difference.
My name is Belle Lopez, I am one of the co-founders of Children Over Politics and the daughter of a homecare worker. Growing up, I was always surrounded with very inspiring leaders throughout SEIU and community organizations. I became involved with Children Over Politics when we first came together in the summer of 2014 to fast in solidarity with the Central American children being held in immigration facilities in Murrieta. Since then, I have been involved in helping build our organization for youth to speak on important issues such as Immigration, Racial Justice, Civic Participation and Wage Equality. Being actively participating in actions, rallies, informational meetings and other community events since I was younger, these experiences created a spark of knowledge that I have to this day.
